Faith Focus: Is it well with your soul?

When her fingers hit the piano keys, everyone involuntarily sat up a bit straighter at the crisp and powerful sound. A few seconds later, her daughter began to sing, and I knew immediately that, as we say here in the South, “the meeting was about to be on.”

It was a couple of Sundays ago and the song being sung was “It Is Well With My Soul.” Seated up on the platform, I looked toward the back of the auditorium to where I knew my wife was seated. Her hand was raised in immediate worship. My eyes scanned across the room and I could see tears beginning to flow, faces raised toward heaven, hands lifted up, and I could hear praise filling the air.

“When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows role, whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well, with my soul.”

I know my people. They have been through many a deep valley, including the ones playing and singing the song.

“Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control, that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, and hath shed his own blood for my soul.”
