No. 20 UTC women survive scare at Samford, 56-49

The 20th-ranked University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball team rallied from a seven-point deficit in the second half to beat Samford 56-49 in Southern Conference action Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.

The Mocs (24-3, 12-0 SoCon) shot 65 percent in the second half to make up for a 25 percent performance in the first half, and they took the lead for good with 9:39 remaining in the game with Jasmine Joyner stole the ball and got the ball to senior Ka'Vonne Towns for a layup.

The Bulldogs (14-13, 7-5) and were within one point with 2:11 to play before field goals by Keiana Gilbert and Chelsey Shumpert and four free throws by Towns sealed UTC's 20th consecutive win.

Joyner led the Mocs with 13 points, seven rebounds and six blocks. Gilbert had 12 points, Shumpert added 11 and Towns went 6-for-6 at the free-throw line and finished with 10 points.

Samford was led by Destiney Elliott and Hannah Nichols with 15 points each.
