The Jackson County EMA has declared all road impassible. Multiple motor-vehicle accidents are reported throughout the county. They are asking that everyone avoid driving.

According to Twitter, Ringgold stores are out of sleds, and it’s started snowing in Ringgold, Chickamauga and Calhoun, Ga., on Lookout Mountain and in Ider, Ala. Chattanooga police say that if you “see snow fall, go slow, y’all. Most crashes in winter weather are caused by motorists driving too fast for conditions.”

Flights have been grounded at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport because of snow and all roads in DeKalb County have been declared impassable.

At 2 p.m. EST, weather radar at the National Weather Service office in Huntsville, Ala., showed precipitation – mostly rain but with some sleet and snow on the northern edge – moving toward Middle Tennessee, Northwest Georgia and Chattanooga from the Birmingham area and Western Alabama.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Chattanooga area between 1 p.m. today and 7 a.m. Thursday.

The warning covers Hamilton, Marion, Bradley, Sequatchie, Meigs, Polk and McMinn counties, as well as northwest Monroe County.

Forecasters expect between three and six inches to fall this afternoon and into Thursday morning, according to the warning.

The warning states that the snowfall will make roads difficult to drive on and will likely reduce visibility at times.

“If travel is unavoidable, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the warning says.
