Low-income local residents who’ve been waiting just to get on a waiting list for housing vouchers may have their chance soon.

The Chattanooga Housing Authority plans to create a new waiting list for Housing Choice Vouchers for the first time since 2010, Executive Director Betsy McCright said in a news release.

The vouchers are aimed at helping low-income families, the disabled and the elderly in Hamilton County get into affordable, privately owned housing.

McCright said the agency has “exhausted all applicants” on the waiting list created in 2010, and now plans to create a new list using a lottery system.

The list will be open for one day only, on Jan. 26, from 12:01 a.m. (just after midnight) to 11:59 p.m.

Applications will be accepted online only. Preapplications must be submitted online at www.chahousing.org during the waiting list registration period. Applicants may complete the preapplication on smartphones that have Internet access.

From those applications, CHA will randomly select 1,000 names, which will be posted online at noon Feb. 2. Paper lists will be posted at CHA public housing management offices.

For people without access to computers, assistance will be available at the CHA office, 801 N. Holtzclaw Ave., from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 26. For more information on the Housing Choice Voucher program and the registration process, please visit www.chahousing.org or call 423-752-4893.
