UTC Mocs must try to slow speedy Keydets

The primary objective of the Virginia Military Institute basketball offense is to get up as many shots as possible. The goal of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s team Thursday night will be to slow the Keydets’ shot-happy attack.

The Keydets lead the nation in possessions per game (77), 3-pointers made (216), 3-pointers attempted (706) and 3-pointers made per game (11.4). Their percentages aren’t great, but they average 71.3 shots per game and 82.9 points — fifth in the nation.

Basically, VMI tries to take two shots per minute, and more if it has the opportunity. The Keydets had 105 shots in a 133-62 win over Mid-Atlantic Christian on Dec. 2.

“They’re the fastest team in the country,” UTC coach Will Wade said. “They play a very unique style and have a unique way of doing things. They’re committed to that style and they do a good job. There might be some recruiting challenges, and some other difficulties there, so it’s a good way to do things.”

Something will give when the teams face off in their Southern Conference game at McKenzie Arena, as the Mocs are a top-15 defense nationally in 3-pointers allowed per game (4.9) and allowed to be attempted (13.8).
