‘ Description: Dollar General operates 30 stores in the metropolitan area. Its new site is across the street from the Foxwood Heights shopping center, which includes a Family Dollar store. The site was formerly owned by local dentist Thomas Rumph, who relocated his practice earlier this year to 4727 Brainerd Road.
‘ Company expansion: This Dollar General is one of 730 new stores the Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based retailer plans to open this year. Dollar General also is adding a new store on South Broad Street in Chattanooga, scheduled to open by Aug. 1. It will have a “soft” opening later this week to train new workers. Dollar General plans to remodel or relocate another 875 stores and add more than 7,000 new jobs this year. Since 2009, Dollar General says it has added 30,000 new jobs. The company employs nearly 110,000 full- and part-time workers.
‘ Strategy: Earlier this year, Dollar General tried unsuccessfully to buy rival Family Dollar, which resisted the sale. Family Dollar was sold last week to discount retailer Dollar Tree. The merger of Dollar General’s two primary rivals last Monday made Dollar Tree the largest dollar-store chain in the United States by store count with 13,000 locations. But Dollar General, which previously held the top spot, remains No. 2 in the number of retail outlets across the country.
