Walker County doesn’t need Heiskell’s leadership
I thought the TFP story on the Walker County sole commissioner’s spending spree was well done.
I was especially moved by Bebe Heiskell’s efforts to spend our money to promote tourism for our county, usually the domain of those who have experience in that area. Her entrepreneurial spirit is commendable.
Heiskell seems to have lost sight of the fact that she was hired to manage county business, not start new ones, and especially not new restaurants.
Fortunately, I hope she will be retiring in about 18 months. I doubt our little county could survive any more of her benevolent guidance and great ideas.

Editorial misleading on state of bee health
In a piece on the July 7 Free Press editorial page, the author asserts that the alleged disappearance of honey bees due to, among other things, neonicotinoids, is “junk science.”
He further asserts that “in the United States, honey bees and the number of honey-producing hives are increasing according to the Department of Agriculture.”
With all due respect, the author is dead wrong and ignores the most recent report of the Department of Agriculture on honeybee colony losses in the U.S. That report states, in pertinent part, that: “Total annual losses were 42.1 percent for April 2014 through April 2015.
That new figure is up from 34.2 percent for 2013-2014 ” So, in reality, losses of honeybees are increasing, not decreasing.
The author also ignores 15 years of research showing that neonicotinoids are the “DDT of the 21st century.”
I would like to leave the reader with two important facts about bees: Bees are an indicator species which signal the well-being of our broader environment. So their message is very important.
And finally, bees pollinate 75 percent of the food we eat.

GOP would do well to listen to Trump
Donald Trump is not amusing. He is merely doing what the GOP should be doing – telling it like it is.
We are beginning to wonder which side of the aisle the Republicans are on. It seems that when Obama says “jump,” you say how high.
When some of you were elected you were going to get to the bottom of these scandals: Benghazi, the IRS, Veterans Administration, and of course, Obamacare.
Then there’s Hillary deciding how many more tales she can make you believe about Benghazi, and Obama is still getting everything he wants so he can finish bringing this country down in the time he has left.
Take notice of what Donald Trump is telling the crowds and apply it in your own way. If you don’t, you may find this funny man in the White House or a woman (God forbid), and it won’t be Daisy Duck!
