Navy officer, Marine shot at Chattanooga gunman, according to report

An FBI investigator investigates the scene of a shooting outside a military recruiting center on Friday, July 17, 2015, in Chattanooga

A Navy officer and a Marine fired their weapons hoping to kill or subdue 24-year-old Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez, the gunman who killed five service members on Thursday, July 16, in Chattanooga, according to a news report.

The Navy Times cites multiple military officials familiar with internal reporting on the tragedy, but it's unclear if Abdulazeez was hit by either of the service members' gunfire.

Abdulazeez was shot and killed Thursday after he gunned down four Marines and a sailor at the Navy Operational Support Center in Chattanooga.

It is not known why the two servicemen were armed, as it is against Defense Department policy for anyone other than military police or law enforcement to carry weapons on federal property.
