Q: What do I do if I develop a rash from poison ivy exposure?
A: Sometimes you cannot avoid these plants; however, if you do, here are some things to keep in mind: Don’t scratch since that can lead to an infection. Leave blisters alone. The rash is not contagious and the fluid from the blisters will not cause the rash to spread. For mild cases, cool compresses, calamine lotion, and over-the-counter antihistamines and cortisone cream will alleviate most symptoms. For more severe cases, a visit to your physician may be required for a steroid shot or pills as well as prescription-strength cortisone cream. However, trouble breathing or swallowing and rashes involving most of the body, the face and the eyes can be serious, and immediate medical attention is required.
