Q: What is the most serious type of skin cancer?
A: Melanoma is the most dangerous form. The American Academy of Dermatology estimated that 1 in 50 Americans will develop melanoma in their lifetime. Melanoma begins when something is awry with the body’s pigment cells and they multiply rapidly, forming malignant tumors. Most form on the skin as a new dark spot or within an existing mole and can quickly spread to other parts of the body. Melanoma spreads to the skin immediately around the original lesion, but it can also be carried by the lymphatic system to the lymph nodes and through the bloodstream to other organs like the liver, brain, and lungs. Those with fair skin are the most at risk, but it can affect people of all skin colors. People who have moles should monitor their skin monthly for any new or changing moles and also ask a physician to check them at their annual checkup or make an appointment with a dermatologist.
