Around the Region: Voorhies, Webb reach Tennessee Super Senior final

Winchester’s and Brentwood’s Jim Webb will take aim at the Tennessee Super Senior Four-Ball Championship this morning after scoring an upset in Friday’s match play semifinals at Oak Ridge Country Club. Seeded fourth for match play after two rounds of stroke play on Wednesday and Thursday, Voorhies and Webb beat top-seeded Ron Bargatze and Mike Nixon 1-up to earn a place in today’s 7:30 a.m. final against Jim Brown and Ron Kilgore. Nixon won last year’s title while paired with Mike Patton. Voorhies is a two-time runner-up in the 65-and-older competition, but Webb is a new playing partner. On the same course, in the Tennessee Senior Four-Ball Championship, Chattanoogans Richard Keene and Neil Spitalny were seeded No. 1 in the eight-team match play bracket for golfers 55 and older. They won their quarterfinal 3 and 2 on Friday morning but lost by the same score in the afternoon’s semifinals to fourth-seeded Steve Golliher and Danny Green, the tournament’s two-time defending champions.

Tennis

Sewanee has hired Felix Mann as associate tennis coach for its men’s and women’s teams, according to a release from the school. Mann joins the Tigers after serving as head coach for the men’s and women’s teams at Averett University in Danville, Va., since 2013. He replaces Currie Martin, who has taken a job as head coach at Centre College in Danville, Ky. Like Sewanee, Centre competes in the NCAA Division III’s Southern Athletic Association. A native of Herndon, Va., Mann played at Atlanta’s Oglethorpe University, graduating in 2011 and working as an assistant coach at Rhodes College for two years before heading to Averett. Sewanee’s men’s roster this past season included four Baylor School graduates – Alex Cooper, Chris Cooper, Eric Roddy and Niamke Shropshire-Boykin, with Alex Cooper the lone senior in that group – while the women’s roster included Maggie Crumbliss, another Baylor grad, and GPS alum Bronte Goodhue, who was a senior.

Volleyball

The Dalton State College women’s volleyball program has added NaDiah Fry, a graduate of Lakota East High in Liberty Township, Ohio, to its roster for the 2015 season, according to a release from the Northwest Georgia school. The Cincinnati-area recruit was a captain for her high school team last season and the Greater Miami Conference’s top blocker the past two years. She helped lead her AAU team to an eighth-place finish among 127 teams competing in the national finals, with Fry’s team falling to the eventual champions. Dalton State reached the NAIA’s Southern States Athletic Conference tournament semifinals last year, the Roadrunners’ first season of conference competition and second season overall. Said Roadrunners coach Bruna Langner, “We are super excited that NaDiah has chosen to come to Dalton State. She is a phenomenal student and volleyball player. NaDiah will add a lot to our team.”
