Q: I have abdominal pain. Do I need a CT scan?

A: Maybe. First go to your doctor, or the emergency room if it is an emergency. Based on your history and physical exam, you may not need any radiologic study. If it is determined that a radiologic exam is necessary, there are several common options. Computed Tomography (CT) is a great exam for many possible causes of abdominal pain such as diverticulitis and appendicitis. For certain conditions, such as suspected gallbladder pain, an ultrasound may be considered. Finally, for additional problem solving, usually after a CT or ultrasound, MRI is available as well. The exact imaging recommendations will be based on your specific circumstance and the results of your work-up to date.
