Three choirs present benefit concert

Three choirs will combine to present two works by Gabrielle Faure in a 7 p.m. concert Wednesday at Second Presbyterian Church.

The concert is one in a series of benefit performances that have been held at the downtown church to raise funds for the replacement of the instruments in the church sanctuary.

The Chattanooga Boys Choir will open the concert with Faure’s Messe Basse mass, which is scored for treble voices and accompaniment. The second half of the program will be presented by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Chamber Singers and Second Presbyterian Chancel Choir, combining to perform Faure’s Requiem.

The 37-voice adult choir will be accompanied by organist David Friberg and pianist Mickey Kingdon. Featured soloists will be UTC students Glory Larm and Connor Behrman and graduate student Randall Bright.

The first concert in this series helped fund the purchase of a 9-foot Steinway concert grand piano for the sanctuary, according to Kevin Ford, choral director at the church and at UTC.

“We have been able to rebuild the harpsichord, so the only thing left — and the largest of the expenses — is the replacement of the organ console,” which is about $125,000, says Ford.

Admission to the concert is free but a free-will offering will be collected between the two segments of the program.
