Eight of TVA’s nine mainstream dams are spilling water to bring down rain-swollen lake levels this week.

Nearly 3 inches of rain is forecast to fall this week in Chattanooga. TVA opened the floodgates at the Chickamauga Dam in Chattanooga over the weekend, in addition to operating the four generating water-powered turbines around the clock. Combined, more than 487,000 gallons of water a second were flowing through Chickamauga Dam Monday, TVA spokesman Travis Brickey said.

The increased water flow is not enough to limit most river navigation.
