Two dogs were hurt and three people lost their home Sunday afternoon when a fire of unknown origin destroyed a house at 1018 Line St. in Chattanooga.

City Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner said the three adults arrived home recently to find firefighters on the scene and the house a smoking ruin.

Firefighters who arrived at 2:20 p.m. found their work hampered by debris and hidden complications from prior reconstruction work.

A dog in the house had inhaled smoke, so firefighters used a pet rescue mask to administer oxygen. Another dog tied in an outbuilding was suffering from burns and smoke, but was too combative to be treated. A third dog tied in the front yard appeared unharmed. All were handed over to the McKamey Animal Center, Garner said.
