UNC-Charlotte interested in UTC Mocs coach Will Wade

The rumors have begun.

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s basketball coach Will Wade has been linked to the coaching vacancy at UNC-Charlotte. Gary Parrish, a senior writer at CBS Sports that covers college basketball, mentioned on a recent podcast that Wade and Charlotte have been talking “for weeks.”

When reached for comment by the Times Free Press Monday, Wade had no comment.

Wade, who currently makes $187,000 per year, received an extension from UTC after the 2013-2014 season.

“We believe in him, and he’s good, and it’s no secret that good people get found,” UTC athletic director David Blackburn said at the time of the extension last year. “If he continues to show that he knows what he’s doing, then there will be other schools pursuing him. We knew that when we hired him.

“That was my hope, because that means he’s done a good job here.”

UNC-Charlotte, which competes in Conference USA, finished 14-18 and 7-11 in Conference USA, falling 63-60 to Middle Tennessee State in the conference tournament’s first round.

Previous head coach Alan Major and the program parted ways after the season.
