Strides of March adds race to Memorial Walk

Chattanooga CARES is marking the 20th anniversary of its Strides of March memorial walk with the addition of a new feature: a 10K multisurface run and 5K road race. They will take place Sunday at 8 a.m. before the annual Memorial Walk at 1:30 p.m.

Chattanooga CARES is the Tennessee Valley’s HIV/AIDS resource center, which opened in 1986. In addition to the resource center, CARES offers advocacy, nutrition, utility, mortgage, transportation and medical services to clients in addition to free, rapid HIV testing to the public, according to its website.

Strides of March raises awareness about HIV/AIDS as well as funds to support assistance to individuals and families coping with an HIV/AIDS diagnosis.

The 10K/5K event will take place at the Stringer’s Ridge Trail. Participants should meet at the trailhead on Spears Avenue. Registration starts at 7 a.m. for the 8 a.m. race. Registration fee if paid today is $40. It increases to $45 on race day.

There is also a “virtual runner” fee of $25 for those who prefer to sleep in Sunday and make a donation to CARES.

Registration starts Sunday at noon in Renaissance Park for the Memorial Walk, which steps off at 1:30 p.m. Participants may either make a donation to Chattanooga CARES or take pledges for completing the 3-mile walk.
