Members of the Health Care Service Credit Union Tuesday night honored the founder of what was Tennessee’s first hospital credit union during the group’s 63rd annual meeting. Walter Haddock, who died last year, was a payroll officer for Erlanger hospital in the 1950s and started the Erlanger credit union in 1952.
“He wanted to help his fellow employees who needed cash or loans so he worked to help establish the credit union,” said Susant Tant, the current CEO of the Health Care Service Credit Union.
Haddock served the credit union for 33 years before retiring in 1985. The institution changed its name from the Erlanger Credit Union to the Health Care Service Credit Union when Erlanger built is Medical Mall.
The credit union has about 4,000 members and $17 million in assets, Tant said.
