KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chris Young and reliever Ryan Madson have combined on a no-hit bid for the Kansas City Royals through seven innings against the Detroit Tigers.

Young, who was making his first start of the season Friday night, was pulled when his pitch count reached 81 after five innings with the Royals leading 4-0. He struck out nine and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth when he walked three straight. He threw 34 pitches in the inning.

Madson replaced Young and worked a perfect sixth, which included Miguel Cabrera flying out to Alex Gordon on the left-field warning track.

Madson also set down the Tigers 1-2-3 in the seventh.
