Look for the grand opening of the Cabela’s store in Fort Oglethorpe to be particularly festive Wednesday, May 13, with a performance by country newcomer Lucas Hoge mingled in with the door-prize drawings and giveaways.
Doors open at 10 a.m. after an unusual ribbon-cutting. Store executives will forgo ceremonial big scissors in favor of letting an employee sever the ribbon with an arrow shot from a bow.
Hoge, signed in March as a Cabela’s brand ambassador, will entertain between 8 and 10 a.m. He’ll be joined by TV and radio host Laura Lynn. Sightings of the Jack Link’s Sasquatch are guaranteed between 7 and 11 a.m.
Guests 18 and older may enter for a chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree or a GoPro camera.
Throughout the weekend, the first 50 people through the doors will receive a free gift: Cabela’s utility bag on Thursday, May 14; commemorative cap on Friday, May 15; tripod stool on Saturday, May 16; and a gift card on Sunday, May 17.
Visits by outdoor experts are planned that weekend as well, including Kristy Titus, co-host of “Team Elk” on the Outdoor Channel, and Steve Scruggs, known as “The Snake Master.” Also on hand will be Cabela’s ambassador David Walker and pro staff Ann Nimmer and Brian Godfrey. All will be available between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17.
The 72,000-square-foot store near the intersection of I-75 and State Route 146, is designed to provide an outdoor-like experience, with features including a mountain replica, aquarium, museum-quality wildlife displays, indoor archery range, gun library and a bargain cave, along with a fudge shop and deli.
It’s located at 350 Cobb Parkway off Exit 353 of Interstate 75 in a development currently anchored by Costco.
The store has hired some 200 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees to staff the store, which includes hunting, camping, fishing, home and cabin departments. Employees also will host educational seminars and demonstrations offering tips on products and activities.
