Swimmer Brian Glatt became Sewanee’s 31st NCAA Postgraduate Scholar this past week. That comes with a $7,500 grant for grad school. Glatt, who is from Knoxville, was a three-time Southern Athletic Association champion and earned 15 all-conference honors for his meet finishes through the year. He set school records in the 100 and 200 freestyle events and was part of record-setting 200, 400 and 800 relays. A perennial All-SAA Academic honoree who also was a multiple CSCAA Scholar Academic first-team All-Americna, he finished with a 4.01 grade point average as a biology major. “Brian personifies what it is like to be a Sewanee scholar-athlete,” coach Max Obermiller said in a school release. “His devotion to excellence is evident in all he does athletically and academically, and he also understands what it takes to be a great teammate and leader.”

Baseball

* The Chattanooga State baseball team finished second this season to Walters State in the TCCAA regular season, in the NJCAA Region VII tournament and now in the East Central District tournament, with an 18-8 loss Saturday in a final at Walters that took more than four hours with a 74-minute rain delay included. But the Senators are ranked No. 4 in the nation and take a 54-10 record into the program’s sixth Junior College World Series appearance in 13 years. Chattanooga State, 22nd in the last poll, began the day by completing a sweep of the two Georgia teams in the district tournament with a five-inning 12-1 thrashing of No. 23 South Georgia State. Nick Mason pitched a four-hitter and the Tigers (32-13) scored nine runs in the first inning of that game, with RBI singles by Michael Goss, JoJo Underwood, Chaz Vesser and Andy Clay and a two-run double by Nate Schmal. Underwood homered in the fourth and David Mayo tripled and scored on a Ben Young hit in the fifth, when Michael Halley got his second RBI with a sacrifice fly. Walters State did the first-inning jumping in the championship game, with home runs by Ramon Osuna, Ross Grosvenor, Jarrett Hood and Weston McArthur for a 6-0 lead. The Tigers’ Underwood singled in a run in the first inning and got them within a run at 7-6 in the fourth with a homer after Halley’s double, but the Senators scored five runs in the next two innings and made it 16-6 in the seventh. Underwood wound up 3-for-5 and Halley, Schmal and Hunter Parker each had two hits in defeat. Noah Karst was 1-for-2 with a two-run double.
