Trion boys, Calhoun girls win state golf titles

Two area high school golf teams made history Monday night.

They didn't become official on the Georgia High School Association site until Tuesday.

Trion coach Garrett Brown wasn't sure who finished runner-up in the Class A state boys' tournament. But he knew driving home that his team had posted a 307 and was ahead of Commerce by more than 40 shots.

"It was a great day for our boys," Brown said. "They hit the ball where they needed to hit it."

All of Calhoun High School celebrated Tuesday morning an accomplishment by its girls' golf team that took until almost dark Monday. The Lady Yellow Jackets won the first golf state championship in school history by shooting a three-player total of 261 at Horseshoe Bend Country Club in Roswell.

That Class AAA tournament took more than 11 hours to complete due to two two-hour rain delays and typical slow play.

"Four teenage girls with nothing to do is not good," coach Clay Stephenson said. "A couple of them took naps. They did a whole lot of nothing except look outside at the rain."

Katie Rose Rawls set the pace for Calhoun with an 83, Kate Mashburn shot an 86, Katie Kauffman shot a 92 and Maddie Crump had the drop score of 95.

"Any combination of the four and we still would have won by at least two," said Stephenson, whose team toppled second-place Blessed Trinity by 15 strokes.

Sonoraville placed third at 277 -- with freshman Clara Hulsey shooting a 6-over 78 -- and North Murray placed fifth.

At Double Oaks golf course, Trion's Ben Huggins earned the medalist honor with a 3-under-par 69. The senior's round included a double eagle on No. 12, his third hole of the day. Teammate Dawson Day finished runner-up with a 73. Noah Hankins shot an 80 and Lee Langston added an 85.

"I holed out from 212 yards with a 4 iron, and I didn't realize that it went in," Huggins said. "Winning state is the dream of a lifetime."
