Grand Thoughts: Kindness extends through generations

“Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see,” Mark Twain said.

And it’s also something that can envelop your heart in joy.

My family was the recipient of a heartfelt gift of kindness recently when a very thoughtful and sweet woman, Juanita Boyd, sent us a jar of handmade apple butter. She made it from apples she picked off the tree in my late mom’s yard. During the most recent apple season, the tree was loaded with big, green, delicious apples.

Her apples were a gift to the neighborhood. Mother loved the apples but also enjoyed sharing them with neighbors and family. She loved seeing people stop at her house and pick an apple from the tree. Even the mailman enjoyed a daily snack.

It didn’t stop with her death. My mother died in July 2014, but I didn’t put her house on the market until a year later. It was just too hard to let go. And during the time it sat empty, people kept coming to the apple tree to pick the fruit, with my family’s blessing.
