The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestlers posted a pair of shutout victories Saturday and boosted their season record to 2-1.
Even with a lineup sprinkled with freshmen, the Mocs went 20-0 in defeating former Moc Javier Maldonado’s Southeastern University 50-0 and hanging a 49-0 decision on Cumberland University.
It was the Mocs’ fourth shutout and their first since 2013 over Cumberland. This was the first dual meet in Southeastern’s history.
“Any time you go undefeated, 20-0, it’s good in individual matches,” UTC coach Heath Eslinger said. “Southeastern is a first-year program, and kudos to them for coming and competing against us.”
The Mocs beat Gardner-Webb 47-0 and Anderson 40-0 on Nov. 14 of the 2008-09 season, Eslinger’s first as head coach.
Promising freshmen secured 12 of the 20 victories with dual wins coming from Alonzo Allen (125), Chris DeBien (133), Kamaal Shakur (157) and Dominic Lampe (165).
It was a special day for the Lampe family because it might be a day that’s never repeated. While Dominic won twice at 165, senior John Lampe won at 184 and 197 and sophomore Justin Lampe won at 174 and 184.
“They’re brothers but it’s funny how different they are, but they’re awesome kids, each in his own way,” Eslinger said. “When you have three brothers in a lineup, I think it shows that their parents believe in what we’re doing. A lot of times you don’t have that, and it’s neat to see the culture we’ve created there.”
The Mocs will take this week to prepare for North Carolina State’s Wolfpack Open next weekend. The next home match is Dec. 18 against No. 20 Ohio University.
