SOUTH PITTSBURG, Tenn. – After more than a two-hour weather delay, officials determined that the field at Beene Stadium was unplayable and rescheduled the Region 3-1A football clash between Whitwell and South Pittsburg for Sunday at 4 p.m. EDT.

Lightning strikes, just as the teams took the field for warmups, caused the initial delay, but a downpour left the home sideline and a corner of one end zone flooded, which extended the delay and eventually led officials to postpone the game.

“The problem was so much water came down in such a short time that the drain couldn’t keep up, and two hours after it stopped raining we still had six to eight inches of standing water on the sideline,” South Pittsburg coach Vic Grider said. “The officials kept telling us that they weren’t going to let the game get started because it was a safety issue for the players.

“I’ve been here my whole life, and I’ve never seen it like that.”

The top spot in Region 3-1A, and likely the region title and home-field advantage in the early playoff rounds, will be decided when the Pirates and Tigers play Sunday.

South Pittsburg (4-2, 3-0) owns a 24-game winning streak over the cross-county rival Tigers (3-3, 2-0), including last year’s 29-28 thriller.
