Do-over in Ooltewah

The inaugural Oktoberfest in Ooltewah was rained out earlier this month, so organizers have rescheduled the event for Saturday, Oct. 24. The celebration featuring traditional food, music and activities, including a longest- beard contest, will take place from noon to 5 p.m. at Cambridge Square, 9453 Bradmore Lane. The day begins with a parade of taps to introduce the beers. An admission of $10 applies only to beer drinkers, with proceeds going to Pink Heals, a local breast cancer charity. Email oktoberfestinooltewah@gmail.com for more information.

More than half of this weekend’s festivals are church and neighborhood happenings, but there are three larger events to take note of.

‘ If you’re shopping for fine art – Christmas is just nine weeks away – then a day-trip to Atlanta is in order either Saturday or Sunday to visit the Atlanta Arts Festival in Piedmont Park.

This autumn festival draws artists from across the country. There are 193 participating artists, not to mention 16 concessionaires whose foods range from wood-fired pizzas to jalapeno corn dogs to Brazilian barbecue.

In addition to showing and selling their work, artists will demonstrate their crafts and participate in Creation Station. Although it sounds like a children’s area, Creation Station is an art tent where grown-ups can participate in hands-on and collaborative activities with artists.

‘ For years Hale’s Bar Marina in Guild, Tenn., was a destination for the Fall Color Cruise. There’s still an event at the marina, says office manager Karen Giblin, but it’s not called the Color Cruise anymore. The event was changed to a festival last year, but got off to a slow start when that weekend’s weather was so cold and rainy that few folks ventured out.

The festival will get a reboot this Saturday and Sunday. Giblin says 30 food and crafters have been booked and “there’s no yard-sale stuff. It’s all new and handmade.”

The miniature golf course will be open, and football games will be on the TVs in the restaurant. Singer Lauren Blackmon is the opening act at 9 a.m. Saturday and again at 10 a.m. Sunday. Giblin says music has been scheduled throughout both days with Afflicshun closing down Saturday’s festival at 8 p.m. and Double Cross Bluegrass closing out the event on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

‘ Visitors to the Fall Arts Fest on Saturday at Cleveland’s Museum Center at Five Points have the option of buying or making art. The festival is scheduled to be held outdoors but will move inside the museum if it rains.

Hulon Dunn says 26 artists from Cleveland and the surrounding area will be showing woodworking, pottery, jewelry, painting, photography and apparel. G-Daddy’s Barbecue and Tasteful Gatherings will sell food.

What sets this event apart is that five artists will lead hands-on workshops, which require advance registration. Most classes are capped at 20.

The workshop cost is $20 for museum members, $25 nonmembers. Dunn says there will also be a children’s craft corner where little ones can make a Christmas ornament or other craft for $5.

Entertainment is booked from noon to 6 p.m.
