SOUTH PITTSBURG, Tenn. – A section of Raulstontown Road has been slowly sliding off South Pittsburg Mountain since heavy rains caused a flash flood in July 2013 that triggered the road’s failure.
Now, engineers think they have designed at least a short-term answer.
Paul Thomas, an engineer with Stantec in Chattanooga, said the “stability issue” has been extensively investigated over the past year through a geotechnical survey.
“We’ve come up with a hybrid wall design, which is partially a dam wall and transitional walls on each side,” he said.
The construction plans for the “free-flowing wall design” have been submitted to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development office for review.
