Luckovich cartoon low blow to city
Looking at The Times editorial page Thursday blew me away. I was shocked, bothered and bewildered to view the cartoon you chose to print by Mike Luckovich.
Chattanooga has been hurt badly enough by the Volkswagen fiasco and you print a cartoon that furthers the hurt inflicted upon a company that is so important to the financial health to our great city. Why aggravate this situation that affects all Chattanoogans by choosing to print this inflammatory cartoon.
This was certainly bad taste on your part and I find it hard to believe that you chose it over other cartoons available to you.

Sheriff correct on warning
Sheriff Jim Hammond, you are right on. Keep watch over our enemies. Pray tell how in the world are we supposed to tell the radical Muslims from the others before our people are dead?
I say pack ’em up and move ’em out.

Hammond comments bigoted, absurd
I find the alarmist remarks of our Hamilton County sheriff about Muslims in this country to be not only bigoted but absurd. His comment that “[Islam has] built a structure to take over this country” is particularly absurd.
First of all, just as the sheriff admitted, most Muslims are not jihadists. As the president of the Islamic Society of Chattanooga said, the vast majority of Muslims here were as appalled by the attack on our servicemen as the rest of us. I myself am very pleased to have Muslims as neighbors, along with other people of many different religions.
Second, even the most paranoid should notice that Muslims constitute about 1 percent of the population of the United States, which is the most powerful country in the world. Our military expenditures exceed the expenditures of the next nine countries combined! Is Sheriff Hammond suggesting that Americans are too timid to protect our country? What an insult!
We are indeed the land of the free and the home of the brave – whether we be Muslim, Jewish, Christian, black or brown or white.

Carson’s rhetoric is disappointing
Dr. Ben Carson’s stage presence is composed and mature, and his personal and professional stories are inspiring. This made his recent bigoted comments about religious beliefs and presidential office especially disappointing. I hope Dr. Carson at least finds it acceptable for Muslim doctors to continue practicing medicine here.
There are more than a million Muslim households in the United States. The vast majority of us are not raising self-righteous Kim Davises, too narrow-minded or too selfish to distinguish between personal religious beliefs and just inclusive laws of the land. We prefer to leave the business of judging in the capable hands of God and the justices of the Supreme Court of the United States of America.
