Big names make for a big month

The music scene in Chattanooga is currently off-the-chain! There’s no other way to put it.

Coming off the recent excitement from the Road to Nightfall series, which featured nearly 30 local bands, it’s obvious the local music offering is blossoming into a force to be reckoned with. Top that off with our local music venues continuing to bring in elite talent and it’s safe to say that now is a great time to be a music fan in the Scenic City.

In the month of April, there are some huge artists coming to the Chattanooga area; enough to make your head spin (in a good way). It starts early, on Sunday, April 3, as underground folk troubadour Malcolm Holcombe comes to Barking Legs Theater. Then, blues legend Buddy Guy is performing at the Tivoli Theatre on Monday, April 11. Ben Harper has reunited with his band, The Innocent Criminals, and they are making a stop on their tour to also perform at the Tivoli on Tuesday, April 19. The very next day, jam band kings Widespread Panic have decided to celebrate April 20 this year in Chattanooga as they perform at Memorial Auditorium.

The National Cornbread Festival made a huge announcement this year: The festival is playing host to Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder on Saturday, April 23. And on the same night, singer-songwriting legend James Taylor is playing at McKenzie Arena.

Next is bluegrass great Tim O’Brien taking the stage at Barking Legs Theater on Thursday, April 28. And to top off this entire month of greatness, hip-hop pioneers Cypress Hill are scheduled to perform at Track 29 on Friday, April 29.

That is all very, very impressive. There was a time when Chattanooga would be lucky enough to get one of those shows in a month’s time. But as impressive as this all is, there is another band which is returning to Chattanooga this month, and a lot of Chattanoogans were lucky enough to see them blow up right before their eyes. In 2011, a newer band called Alabama Shakes was rocking the stage and turning heads at JJ’s Bohemia. Four and a half years later, they are planning their return to Chattanooga, this time with a slew of recent Grammy Awards under their belt, and with the anticipation of a sold-out show at Track on Monday, April 25.
