Courthouse fight between inmate and officer leaves Bradley County corrections officer under investigation

A Bradley County corrections officer is under investigation for using excessive force during a courthouse skirmish earlier this week.

10th Judicial District Attorney General Stephen Crump asked the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to look into a scuffle that erupted Thursday in Judge Sheridan Randolph’s General Sessions courtroom around 3 p.m. between an inmate and a corrections officer.

Crump said the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office called him around 4 p.m. Thursday and asked him to take to send the matter to the TBI. He released few details about the incident, saying anything at this point would be speculation until the investigation is complete.

“We will follow this to wherever the proof and the evidence lead,” Crump said Friday, “and as soon as we’re in a position to make decisions, we certainly will do that.”

The corrections officer involved has been suspended and will remain on suspension until the investigation is complete, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. He had been with the department “for a number of years,” the release states.

His name was not released, and neither was that of the inmate.

The Times Free Press requested any 9-1-1 calls to the Bradley County courthouse related to the incident.

The county’s 9-1-1 director said the office has no record of an ambulance being sent to the Bradley County Judicial Complex between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday.
