Chattanooga police arrest, ID suspect in attempted jewelry store robbery

One suspect is in custody after an attempted robbery of a jewelry store near Hamilton Place mall, said Chattanooga Police Department spokesman Kyle Miller.

At 3:34 p.m. on Friday, officers responded to a call of a robbery at Markman's Diamonds and Fine Jewelry in the 2100 block of Hamilton Place Boulevard where they found and confronted 27-year-old Garris Wooten.

He was taken into custody and charged with aggravated robbery and four counts of aggravated assault for allegedly spraying a pepper-spray type chemical irritant inside the store during the incident.

All four victims were store employees who were treated on scene by HCEMS.

According to a press release from the Chattanooga Police Department, Wooten was dressed in all black and had his face painted.

After being taken into custody, Wooten was also taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation due to his "erratic behavior."
