Cirque du Soleil is about to lay a big egg.

In Chattanooga.

For the first time ever.

Noted for its combination of circus acts, sideshow oddness and visual extravagance, Cirque du Soleil is bringing its production named “Ovo” to McKenzie Arena from July 20-24 for a total of seven performances.

Meaning egg in Portuguese, Ovo focuses on a community of insects that suddenly finds a strange egg in their midst. It premiered in Montreal in 2009 and its cast includes 50 performers, many of whom specialize in acrobatics.

Tickets for the general public start at $35 each, although that’s subject to change, according to Cirque du Soleil officials. They go on sale Friday at www.cirquedusoleil.com/ovo.

Founded in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is the largest theater production company in the world and has created more than 30 different shows over the years. Many start as touring productions inside circus tents often set up in parking lots. Some, however, go straight to arenas while others take up residence in Las Vegas hotels and Disney resorts around the world.

It also has produced shows about Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and, along with Apple Corps, is one of the producers of “Love,” the Cirque du Soleil show based on the music of the Beatles and now playing in the Mirage in Las Vegas.
