The Joyful Sounds, a senior choir founded and directed by music icon Willie Kitchens, will present a free concert Saturday, Aug. 6, at their home church, Christ United Methodist.
Kitchens is a former lead singer of The Impressions, an R&B/soul group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.
Formed in January 2012, The Joyful Sounds usually perform at retirement communities, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and churches. This is their first concert open to the public.
Their selections will include familiar hymns, spirituals and popular tunes, ranging from “Blessed Assurance” to “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” all with Kitchens’ flair for gospel arrangements.
Barbara Kitchens (Willie’s wife) and Ethel Wood, both known locally for their gospel singing, will direct the choir. Marcellus Scott, a solo act busy in local gospel singing circles, is a member of the choir.
The concert will take place in the Commons Auditorium in the church’s new wing. Complimentary desserts and coffee will be served beforehand. A freewill offering will be accepted for the Chattanooga office of the Alzheimer’s Association.
