The Baylor and East Hamilton girls’s soccer teams were about 15 minutes into their matchup Thursday night at Baylor before weather got in the way. With 27:36 left in the first half, lightning and thunder in the area forced the referees to clear the field.

With eyes on the radar, the game was postponed after the usual 30 minutes of waiting.

“Our first priority is the safety of the players,” Baylor coach Curtis Blair said. “Looking at the radar, it was going to be 8:30 to 8:45 before lightning was out of the area, and everyone has to go to school tomorrow, too.”

Rain soon followed after the field was cleared to put a damper on the excitement of a new season.

“It was our first game, so we wanted to see where we were at after the preseason,” Blair said. “It was actually the first time this group of 11 had all been together on the field, because we’ve had some injuries.”

East Hamilton is also trying to hit its stride on the field, and the Lady Hurricanes will have to wait to play their second game. The teams have rescheduled for next Thursday at Baylor.

“It’s early in the season, so the process is still long,” East Hamilton coach Carrie Hill said. “We were just trying to settle down and control the tempo. It’s unfortunate because it was a good 15 minutes both ways, but we are looking forward to next Thursday.”

East Hamilton took the game’s first shot and Baylor added two before the whistle blew.
