Alabama coach Nick Saban continues to use one word as the key characteristic in determining this season’s starting quarterback.

Hint: It’s not “erratic.”

The Crimson Tide held their second preseason scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Bryant-Denny Stadium, with redshirt junior Cooper Bateman, redshirt freshman Blake Barnett and true freshman Jalen Hurts continuing to vie for the job. Redshirt sophomore David Cornwell remains bothered by a foot injury that hindered him in summer workouts.

“There are encouraging things, and the big word I like to use with these guys is consistency,” Saban said in a news conference. “There will be one or two days when it looks like a guy is starting to sort of forge ahead a little bit. Then, two days later, somebody else seems to have a good day or two.

“What the quarterbacks have to understand is that you can’t make the plays that lose the game. We’ve played with quarterbacks here who didn’t win the game, but they didn’t lose the game. It starts with that.”
