Gasoline prices in Chattanooga rose another 2.8 cents per gallon, on average, in the past week to $1.85 per gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 170 gas outlets in Chattanooga.

Despite the increase, local gas prices remained 31 cents per gallon below the U.S. average of $2.16 per gallon this week. The average price of gas in Chattanooga Sunday also was down 25.9 cents per gallon below the same time a year ago.

Chattanooga gas prices remained the lowest in the Mid-South region on Sunday, averaging 6 cents per gallon less than Knoxville and five cents per gallon below the average price in Huntsville, Ala.

Gregg Laskoski, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, said the rise in retail prices reflects the increase in the price of oil averaging $8 a barrel in the past week.

“While wholesale gasoline prices reflect the run-up for crude, it may be short-lived since the clock is ticking on the rally for retail prices with just two weeks left before the Labor Day weekend and summer’s official end,” Laskoski said.. “So consumers should be prepared for modest increases this week that may actually taper off as we approach the holiday weekend.”
