LOOKOUTS 9, SUNS 6

Monday’s recap: Chattanooga scored five runs in the third inning and led 6-1 behind pitching Steven Gonsalves (7-1) before the bullpen helped make the game interesting. The Suns got within one with a four-run seventh, but the Lookouts responded with three runs in the last two innings to stay in the thick of the Southern League’s second-half North Division race. Edgar Corcino, D.J. Hicks and T.J. White each was 3-for-5 for the Lookouts with a total of six RBIs. Corcino had a three-run triple and scored on a Hicks single in the third. Hicks doubled him home in the ninth and scored on White’s single.

Next up: Game two of a five-game series in Jacksonville is tonight at 7:05.

Pitchers: Aaron Slegers (9-7, 3.67 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Lookouts, with Chris Mazza (5-4, 3.74) scheduled for the Suns.

Awards: Gonsalves was named Monday as the Southern League pitcher of the week. The top-10 Minnesota Twins prospect pitched six no-hit innings last Wednesday in a win over Montgomery and racked up nine strikeouts. He has not allowed a run in 21 innings this month while striking out 25.
