LOCAL LEGENDShipley Hollow Road, known to locals as “Pitty Pat Hollow,” is said to be haunted by a beast, sometimes described as a child or imp, named “Pitty Pat.” Legend has it that back in 1775, a female settler and her four kids were crossing a bridge in a horse and buggy when suddenly they heard a “pit, pat, pit, pat,” and a beast the size of a cat ran out on its hind legs in front of the horse. This action spooked the horse, which threw the woman from the buggy. Some say she died instantly; others claim she lived just long enough to see the beast devour her children. The beast can reportedly be spotted chasing after cars on the third Sunday of every fourth month around 12:30 a.m.
