Former Lakeview High School multisport standout Jay Bass has died at the age of 62 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known more commonly as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and a visitation is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilson’s Funeral Home in Fort Oglethorpe. Bass was an all-state football player who also excelled in baseball and basketball at Lakeview, and he signed a scholarship to play both football and baseball at Tennessee, but a physical exam discovered a heart condition that prevented collegiate competition. Bass coached a group of Post Recreation Association all-stars to the Dixie Youth national championship.
