The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into an incident early Friday where Dade County officers fired at a man who tried to run them over.

Two deputies, Sgt. Casey York and Kelvin Haswell, were uninjured in the confrontation with Brandon Kyle Bettis, 26, a GBI news release states.

Dade County Sheriff Ray Cross said Friday the deputies had a vehicle stopped on Slygo Road at 12:26 a.m. and that Bettis sped away in a pickup truck. The deputies chased him to a dead end on Haswell Lane, Cross said. Bettis tried to get away by reversing is truck into a patrol vehicle, which knocked one deputy down. Then Bettis pulled forward and tried to ram the deputies and their cars, Cross said.

That’s when the officers fired multiple times and Bettis surrendered without injury.

The GBI release said a passenger in the truck is not expected to be charged.

The release said York and Haswell will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is routine in officer-involved shootings.

Bettis is facing numerous charges including two counts of aggravated assault on police officers, attempting to elude and reckless driving, the release stated.

The GBI will turn its completed investigation over to the Dade County District Attorney’s Office for review.
