Ask a Doctor: Can I rely on the Internet for medical advice?

Q: Can I rely on the Internet for medical advice?

A: Many reliable Internet sources offer great research material. However, there are some signs that an Internet source may not be as reliable as your healthcare provider, including animated GIFs, pop-up advertisements and random public forums. Many times, physicians provide trustworthy materials for patients to learn more about their condition and treatment options. Remember, most physicians welcome patients who take part in their medical care. While researching credible information is acceptable, it is also important to find a physician who will follow you through your diagnosis to monitor your condition. Be sure to bring your research with you on your doctor visit so you can ask questions and work with your physician to learn more about your diagnosis and treatment options.
