GuitarChattanooga features free concert by Stephen Robinson

Internationally renowned guitarist Stephen Robinson will play a free concert at Chattanooga WorkSpace, 302 W. Eighth St., at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, as part of the Chattanooga Guitar Series.

Series co-founder Michael McCallie says booking Robinson has a special meaning for him.

“I heard Stephen Robinson play at UTC about 17 years ago, and it was the concert that made me want to be a classical guitarist,” he says.

“Subsequently, I studied with him for four years at Stetson University in Deland, Florida, where he is a tenured professor of classical guitar. As soon as I moved back to town a few months back and started this series with Stephen Brehm, I knew that Dr. Robinson HAD to be our first artist.”

McCallie and Brehm created the series to showcase a variety of guitar styles. The two played a concert and a Kickstarter campaign two months to help fund the semi-regular series.

Robinson has played all over the country, won numerous international guitar competitions, recorded several CDs and has received grants from the Fulbright Program as well as the National Endowment for the Arts. Many of his students also have achieved success. Locally, students of Robinson hold guitar positions at Lee University, Southern Adventist University and Cadek Conservatory.
