A runaway chimney fire and a frozen fire hydrant led to the total loss of a home in Hixson this afternoon.

At 11:50 a.m. dispatch received notice of a fire alarm in the 2800 block of Gold Point Circle South. The Dallas Bay Volunteer Fire Department responded and found that a sunroom on the backside of the house was completely on fire.

The family was home and managed to escape without injuries, but because of windy conditions and the frozen hydrant, authorities struggled to get the flames under control. Damages were estimated to be $350,000.

According to officials, the owners had a fire going in the fireplace which was in the sunroom.

Ambers apparently escaped the chimney wall and traveled through the attic and throughout the rest of the home, lighting it on fire.

The homeowners were insured and will be staying with family.

The Red Bank Fire Department and Sequoyah Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene, and the Soddy Daisy Fire Department remained on stand-by at Dallas Bay’s fire station in case of additional emergency calls.
