Constitutional convention bill on calendar Tuesday

A resolution passed last year by the Tennessee Senate calling for a U.S. constitutional convention is coming up Tuesday in the State Government Committee in Nashville.

Senate Joint Resolution 0067 is sponsored by Republican Sens. Mike Bell, of Riceville; Mark Green, of Clarksville; Ed Jackson, of Jackson; Jack Johnson, of Franklin, and John Stevens, of Huntington.

The resolution as introduced “makes application for the calling of an Article V convention under the United States Constitution to consider amendments to impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and limit the terms of office for its officials and for members of Congress.”

It passed the Senate with 23 votes in April 2015. Among local lawmakers voting yes were Republican Sens. Bo Watson and Todd Gardenhire, of Chattanooga; Ken Yager, of Kingston, and Janice Bowling, of Tullahoma.

The Tennessee General Assembly’s website shows a similar resolution in the House introduced last week, and separate House and Senate bills, also introduced last week, authorizing Tennessee’s participation in any Article V convention. The bills are HB2584, by Rep. Curry Todd, R-Collierville , and SB2017, by Sen. Bill Ketron, R-Murfreesboro.
