So the other day I was curating my Facebook page, dialoguing with the couple thousand friends I have on the site, doing my best to make sure they’d seen the latest cats-being-scared-by-cucumbers video when I ran across a clip of James Brown singing “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” with Luciano Pavarotti.
For some reason, the above sentence strikes me as one of the funniest things I’ve ever written. It’s funny because it’s so stupid, and yet so true. It has buzzwords like “curating,” which is au courant, and “dialoguing,” which is so five minutes wait, that’s out too. Anyway, it mentions cats doing hilarious things, which, like videos of small children hitting grown men in the crotch with golf clubs, is funny every single time you see it.
The particular wording of the above sentence shows me to be a caring individual who spends part of his day sharing with others, and it showcases just how hip and up-to-date I am ’cause you know, I’m on Facebook giving to others.
It should also be pointed out that merely using the word hip, makes one unhip, but no matter, I’m a giver.
There is an art to curating a Facebook page. You can’t just share everything you come across. You have to be really picky. That’s how you let people know how smart and cool you are. Posting a picture of the bowl of shredded wheat you’re having for breakfast might seem like a good idea because you think it shows you to be a health-conscious eater, but it doesn’t. It’s lame, and all it really shows is that your life is boring.
Posting a photo of the artisan pizza you crafted from scratch using kale you grew in your hydroponic garden and Indian naan bread, however, showcases how worldly you are and screams “foodie.” Foodies are right at the top of the hipster food chain.
This curating business has to be taken seriously as your entire reputation is at stake. One slip-up, like writing something positive about the wrong presidential candidate, can cost you dozens, maybe hundreds, of dear friends. Sharing a lame pet video or, worse, asking your entire group to join a game involving fruit or building a virtual village is the death knell. Or should be.
Incidentally, the James Brown/Pavarotti video is really good. Both singers – JB especially – look like they were having a ball and proud to be there.
