Thurman’s top concern is students and more letters to the editors

Thurman’s top concern is students

A person stated Patti [Skates] is the perfect role model for our students in District 1. We need a professional who has the backs of our children and the trust of our parents.

My question is, did Patti have the backs of our children when the HCDE was withholding report cards due to nonpayment of school fees? This was totally against the kids’ rights. Did she speak up? No. It took Rhonda Thurman to bring this practice to light and stop it from happening.

Rhonda then ran for the school board and won and has been speaking out for the kids ever since.

Rhonda does not go along to get along. Kids’ best interest are her No. 1 concern. Vote for the kids and parents. Vote Rhonda Thurman.

Vote for Skates to make changes

My wife and I have had four children who have attended and graduated from Hamilton County schools. During their time in school, we volunteered and worked extensively on the PTA. We believe we have some first-hand knowledge of the workings in the school system.

We have sought advice several times from Dr. Patti Skates. We know her to be honest, hardworking and to have high expectations for students. During our time on the PTA boards, she was a tremendous source of knowledge. She will represent District 1 with a positive attitude and make decisions that will benefit the students in her district – and the entire county.

We encourage our friends who live in District 1 to vote for Patti. Bring about the change for the Hamilton County schools that is so desperately needed.

Dr. Skates is the most qualified candidate. She has her doctorate in education and is the only candidate in District 1 who has any background in education. She has been in the trenches and knows what these kids need.

We need to make a change if we are going to make a difference.

Starrett should buy another House seat

Does anyone else feel that something is wrong with this scenario?

Twenty-eight-year old California rich kid comes to Tennessee. Pays for people to knock on doors and hand out his flyers. “Loans” his campaign several hundred thousand dollars. Spends more than a million dollars on ads. Where did this money come from?

Rep. Scott DesJarlais’ salary is $174,000, according to LegiStorm.

Now why would anyone pay out such a huge amount of money for such a comparatively small salary?

Sending hired hands into rural areas to knock on doors at 9 p.m. is not the safest thing to do. At dusky dark, strange car in driveway, strange person coming to the door with something in hand? Not smart.

This smells like four-day-old fish bait. Grant Starrett needs to go back to California and buy a congressional seat there.

Dr. Ira Long’s kindness recalled

Chattanooga lost a great citizen and ophthalmologist with the recent death of Dr. Ira M. Long.

As a former 20-year employee, I never heard Dr. Long raise his voice to anyone. Our office was in the Interstate Life Insurance building and he would take the complete office staff to lunch at the Read House. All of us rode downtown in his antique Cadillac. The office later moved to the Erlanger hospital office building. When we had to work late, Dr. Long would walk each of us to our vehicles.

Lots of times after the office moved to the Eastgate area and became Chattanooga Eye Institute, Dr. Long would join some of us girls for lunch at Longhorn. He always ordered ice coffee.

If I had a medical question or problem, Dr. Long always had great advice. He always called when he got my birthday card.

Dr. Long was my employer and my friend. I will miss him very much.
