WASHINGTON – Bernie Sanders has won North Dakota’s Democratic presidential preference caucuses.

Sanders’ victory over front-runner Hillary Clinton comes as several states vote in the last stages of the race for the party’s nomination.

Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont, made stops in North Dakota in May. He triumphed in spite of a string of Clinton endorsements from key North Dakota Democrats.

Clinton, a former U.S. senator and secretary of state, sent her husband, former President Bill Clinton, to campaign in Fargo last month.

The Democratic nominee will face presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump in November.
