A 25-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the leg outside a home in Red Bank today just before 10:30 a.m., according to police.
Chief Tim Christol said Joshua Sheets was carrying a gun from his house in the 100 block of Pinehurst Avenue to his car, parked outside. The gun was inside a paper bag.
“For some reason, he reached inside the bag with his other hand, pulling the trigger of the gun,” Christol said in a statement.
The bullet hit Sheets’ left thigh, but the wound was not life-threatening, Christol said. Sheets was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Officers briefly set up a crime scene at the site of the shooting, but finished processing the site within about an hour.
