While the Signal Mountain Lions Club will continue to serve the same great barbecue lunch on the Fourth of July that it has for about half a century, there will be one big change to this year’s Independence Day event.
The huge fireworks display organized by the club, which is typically held on the Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club golf course, is moving this year to the soccer fields at Shackleford Ridge County Park behind Signal Mountain Middle/High School.
Event Chairman Ralph Mann said damage to the golf course in previous years is the reason for the change in venue.
“There’s also more room behind the soccer fields,” he pointed out.
The barbecue will begin as usual at Althaus Park, located on James Boulevard behind Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club, Monday, July 4 at 11 a.m. Food will be served until 2 p.m.

Plates are composed of barbecued pulled pork, bun, beans and coleslaw, and all but the buns are available for pickup by the pound through the club’s drive-thru option, said Mann.
The event also features a bouncy house, balloon artist and funnel cakes available for purchase, he said.
“Every penny we earn goes to charity, most of which goes right back into the Signal Mountain community,” said Mann. “The community has always been very good about supporting our activities.”
The fireworks display begins at the soccer fields at dark, between 8:30 and 9 p.m.
