A half-dozen police cars and crime scene tape blocked off the parking lot of a West 38th Street convenience store on Thursday night after a 23-year-old man was shot there.

Chattanooga Police Department Lt. Jerri Sutton confirmed that Thomas McCauley was shot in the ankle and had been taken to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening wound.

McCauley was injured shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday when two males wearing ski masks drove by and shot him in a convenience store parking lot on the corner of Central Avenue and W 38th Street.

She said the shooting happened as Thomas McCauley was leaving the Nine Brothers grocery store.

The masked shooters rolled by in a silver four-door vehicle and opened fire. They were last seen traveling south on Central Avenue.

Sutton could not say whether the incident was gang-related.

The investigation is ongoing and police ask anyone with information to call 423-698-2525.
